Last night I sat watching the construction work going on in the areas surrounding Samora Avenue in Dar es Salaam.
It made me wonder:
Who invested what money to put up these buildings? Seriously, WHERE does the money come from which right now is transforming the Dar es Salaam skyline?
How are the workers paid, and what are conditions in general? Work didn't stop due to darkness.
Who will ever move into these buildings?
What happens when you realise that the amount of people occupying these buildings need transport to take them there and back home?
What happens to the environment - sanitation, air, pollution etc.? I mean: even a child can figure this one out!
Many buildings are constructed so close to each other that there is no light coming in, but you find yourself staring into another window, another wall. Add to that the tropical humidity of Dar es Salaam.
In case of fire - which even happened just recentlly in the PPF Tower - Dar es Salaam has no fire equipment which is able to reach that high. Even a child can figure that one out, too.
So -.this great growth, the up and running African middle class, Africa on the rise and what not - who benefits?
